Teams of high school students design, engineer, and build a one-person electric vehicle, focused on energy efficiency, energy management, and innovation. Teams are challenged to integrate innovative vehicle features and to implement state of the art light-weighting and connected vehicle (V2X) technologies. Vehicles compete on three courses - Figure 8, Road Course, and the Connected Vehicle Course.
Building on a toddler jeep platform, students build mechatronics and programming (C, Python, etc.) skills, utilizing microcontrollers and sensor technologies (Ultrasonic, Vision, etc.) as they re-engineer their jeep to operate autonomously. Performance scores are based upon the level of autonomy and complexity of the real world missions accomplished, including collision avoidance, lane assist, parallel parking, and more.
This project combines the excitement of high-speed racing with technical analysis. Students start with a 1/10th scale RC vehicle, conduct performance testing, collect and analyze data, and then re-engineer the vehicle to optimize performance for five different competitive courses. Teams investigate & utilize sensor technologies, programming, telemetry, schematics & wiring, gear ratio adjustments, and modified suspension geometry.
Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) provide an innovative platform from which to teach applied science and engineering concepts, including environmental studies. Following a two-day workshop, teachers share their ROV knowledge and skills in their classrooms to engage students in ROV Engineering. Student ROVs are designed and built to meet specific operational challenges found at the annual ROV competition.
